About
Since he first began taking pictures in the mid1980s Jim has been drawn to the faces (and stories) of strangers. His place in the mobile photography community was set by his uncanny ability to connect with people, and produce emotional portraits using just his phone. It is these portraits that have caught the attention of others both locally and around the globe and has identified him as a major contributor to the genre.
Jim believes the success of a stranger, or “street”, portrait relies heavily on the trust that is established between photographer and subject. He develops this connection through his approachable demeanor and then (somehow) captures it within the photo. Admirers of his work have remarked, that when viewing his portrait they get a sense that they really know the subject.
When not shooting portraits, Jim’s background in graphic design strongly influences his work and it shows through his attention to composition, texture and color.
Most recently Jim was a featured speaker at the New York City (Upper West Side) Apple Store where he presented his iPhone Portrait Project (with James Campbell). He was a participating artist in the Washington DC mobile photography exhibition “InstantDC” in November 2010. His work is included in Studio b’s Light Impressions Exhibition in [City], Florida through July 2011. He has been featured on Mashable.com’s “10 Incredible iPhone Portraits”, “10 Pro Tips for Snapping Perfect iPhone Photos” and “Top 10 Shake It Photo iPhone Snaps”. Jim is also a frequent contributor to local blogs DCist, and ReadySetDC
His work can also been seen at the Mobile Photo Group where he is a founding member.
