We're living in a society.

I've called myself a graphic designer every since my resume starting saying I was. That was 1988. Four years ago I started taking portraits of strangers which led to me photographing just about everything else. So now I call myself a photographer too.

The subtitle "We're Living in a Society" comes from one of my favorite lines from Seinfeld. It was only uttered twice, from what I remember, and only from George. On those two occasions George felt he was the victim of questionable behavior from strangers. Their selfish acts (simply not telling him the time, or monopolizing a pay phone) caused him to exclaim, "You know we're living in a society!"

I thought that I might share stories here where I witnessed similar behavior but quickly changed my mind, thinking I did not want to focus on the negative, but more the positive actions of strangers that I encounter and photograph. Still, I love the message and especially when I can show that others understand it and act accordingly.

The Juggler

A drifter from the west coast, Robby was juggling outside Gallery Place/Chinatown metro for money. He's traveling with friends and looking for bus fare to Baltimore. They've been in DC for 11 days, sleeping in churches and parks, after having come from Durham, NC. I gave him $5 and he gave me this image.
